Mark Cherrie Quartet

The Mark Cherrie Quartet is a UK jazz group led by steel pan virtuoso Mark Cherrie, renowned for placing the instrument at the heart of a modern jazz sound. Drawing on Cherrie’s Trinidadian heritage and deep roots in the UK jazz scene, the quartet blends Caribbean rhythm, contemporary harmony and strong melodic writing. Alongside pianist John Donaldson, bassist Tom Mason and drummer Eric Ford, Cherrie presents original compositions and imaginative reinterpretations that challenge perceptions of the steel pan. Critically acclaimed albums Joining The Dots and Any Anxious Colour have established the quartet as a distinctive and innovative voice in British jazz.
Sandra‑Mae Lux

Branded a “Canadian jazz legend” by Petroc Trelawny on BBC Radio 3, Sandra‑Mae Lux has become a standout voice on the UK jazz scene. Her all‑original, critically acclaimed album Seasons in Jazz earned Editor’s Choice and 4‑star reviews in Jazzwise, extensive Jazz FM rotation, and multiple BBC Radio 3 appearances, including a live in‑studio performance on Christmas Morning 2025. A Capilano University jazz graduate and award‑winning songwriter, Lux has performed at major festivals including the Ottawa Jazz Festival and collaborated with artists such as Herbie Hancock and Robert Glasper. Now based in South London, she continues to build an international reputation.

Conducted by our Headteacher, Phil Bennett, they are an ensemble who are enjoying exploring the music of big band legends. There will also be a short set from a small band of Year 12 jazz musicians who are already making a name for themselves on the local gig circuit!
The Twyford Trust has an award-winning offer of individual music tuition, choirs, ensembles, bands and other extra-curricular music at our schools. There are now two Jazz Bands, who meet weekly to rehearse.
